Coronavirus in Belgium: Antwerp stabilizes, further increase in Brussels and Liège

The Sciensano Public Health Institute has updated data relating to the coronavirus epidemic in Belgium in its dashboard.

Lhe situation in Antwerp seems to be stabilizing little by little, even if the contamination rate remains high. In contrast, in Liège and Brussels, the number of new cases continues to rise daily, which is partly linked to an increase in tests, but not only.

After Antwerp and Brussels, the province of Liège is the third to cross the rate of 5 daily cases per 100,000 inhabitants. West Flanders, affected by the recovery at the start, fell below the symbolic bar of 2 daily cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Today’s report

The average number of coronavirus infections rose to 550.3 per day between July 28 and August 3, the Sciensano Public Health Institute said on Friday in its dashboard data update. This represents an increase of 46% over the previous week.

The number of infections in Belgium now stands at 72,016, against 71,158 on Thursday.

The number of new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants continues the same upward trend. For the period spanning two weeks, and until August 3 inclusive, 56.5 cases were identified, against 54 Thursday.

The number of hospital admissions is now 24.6 per day (23.3 Thursday), an increase of 31% from the previous week. So there is still nothing to worry about for emergency and intensive care departments. 278 beds are occupied by Covid patients for the moment in Belgium, including 65 in intensive care.

Sciensano also reports an average of 2.6 deaths per day. Since the start of the epidemic, 9,861 people have lost their lives as a result of Covid-19.
