Coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg: doctor destroys hopes for a quick improvement in the situation

The lockdown due to the corona virus in Baden-Württemberg has been going on for months. Many therefore long for summer – but according to a doctor it could not bring any improvement.

Stuttgart – That Coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg (BW24 * reported) led to a large number in the past few months Infection protection measures*. The lockdown, which went into effect back in December, became recent extended until March 7th*.

At the moment, however, the situation in the southwest seems to be easing significantly. In terms of the 7-day incidence, Baden-Württemberg is even better off than all other German federal states. In addition, the ones that started last year are also doing Vaccinations in Baden-Württemberg* Hopes for a return to normal soon.

Despite the positive development with regard to the coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg, a doctor and journalist does not see any relaxation in the situation in spring like that Südwestrundfunk (SWR) reports.

Coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg: “This year we have a different situation”

The coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg was almost unknown when it first broke out in February 2020. Correspondingly difficult was an effective fight against the lung disease, which can be deadly in the worst case. In the summer of last year, however, a more or less normal everyday life gradually returned.

Bars and restaurants were open, you could go to the cinema and move around relatively freely – without curfew and contact restrictions. All of this was of course only in compliance with the hygiene measures as on April 17th introduced mask requirement* possible. In the current lockdown, many people from Baden-Württemberg would like to see such a time again.

The situation due to the coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg is currently significantly different than it was in spring 2020. Some are already talking about a new pandemic in the country. “This year we have a different situation: We have mutations and we have the mutation from South Africa, which also spread there in the summer,” says doctor and journalist Lothar Zimmermann according to the SWR.

The highly contagious corona mutation from South Africa* reached Baden-Württemberg in mid-January. In addition to the first mutation from Great Britain and the variant from South Africa, other mutations have now been detected. The situation is therefore currently uncertain, as it is impossible to foresee how the new virus variants will spread.

Coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg: Mutations bring uncertainty – but one hope remains

The virus mutations that have occurred are cause for concern. The strategy in the fight against the coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg must be adjusted accordingly. It was feared that the vaccine against the mutated virus might be less or even not at all effective.

So far it is only clear that the transmission by vaccinated people is less likely, says Lothar Zimmermann, who also works as a freelancer at SWR is working. However, this cannot yet be ruled out. “The worst thing is always with the virus: we always pant for two weeks before we see the effects,” the doctor continued. This should also be taken into account in the risk assessment.

Does that mean that the citizens of the southwest will have to cope with the tough measures against the coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg for many more months? No, but the current restrictions on social contacts are very helpful in keeping the situation under control, says Lothar Zimmermann. “If there had been no mutations, one could have said: It will probably go exactly the same as last year. We don’t know exactly this year. ”That’s why spring 2020 is not a blueprint for this year, he reports SWR. However, the doctor admits that there is reason for hope.

The Spread of the coronavirus in Baden-Württemberg* Was not just coincidentally lower in summer 2020 than at the beginning of the year. Warm temperatures make it more difficult for the viruses to spread, which, despite the mutations, gives hope for a more relaxed situation. “When it gets warmer again, the mucous membranes are more humid and at the same time the air is also more humid – the viruses sink more easily to the ground and then die,” explains Lothar Zimmermann.

According to the doctor, summer 2021 will not be the same as last year, but relaxation can be expected. “I am actually betting that we will get a relaxation – we have to see how quickly it comes and how strong, but it will relax. I’m quite sure of that, ”says the doctor according to the SWR. *BW24 is part of the Ippen-Digital network.
