Coronavirus in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: beware of travel returns

The number of positive cases for Covid-19 is increasing in the region, while the number of people tested remains stable, which “testifies to a real increase in the transmission of the virus”, according to the Regional Health Agency.

The Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region is no exception. As in the rest of the country, there is a strong progression of the virus, as shown the weekly report of the ARS.

During week 33 (August 10 to 16, 2020), 1,283 new cases confirmed we have been registered against 816 case in week 32.

The incidence rate, defined as the number of positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants in a week, has increased of 10.2 in week 32 to 16,0 in week 33, a + 57% increase.

Note that the number of people tested being stable, these figures testify “a real increase in virus transmission“, according to the ARS.

The Rhône and the Haute-Savoie are the departments with the highest incidence rates.

A phenomenon that was already observed last week: among the people tested positive, 20-30 year olds are the most represented (31.5% of cases). Although the number of cases is increasing in other age categories.

Weddings, family celebrations and return trips, the main sources of contamination

The weekly number of new cluster reports is stable compared to the previous week. As of August 19, 23 clusters Covid-19 infections are being monitored, of which 8 are in Isère, 5 in Haute-Savoie and 3 in the Rhône.

Family gatherings, such as weddings and family celebrations represent nearly a third of the places of contamination. But the returns from vacation are more and more numerous, 4 clusters linked to returns from travel abroad were detected. Holidaymakers returning from Malta, Croatia and Saint Martin in the West Indies have tested positive.

The ARS insists that “people returning to French territory remain isolated and limit their contacts“.

Since the start of the epidemic, 1,772 deaths have been recorded in hospital (ie 7 more than in week 32) and 1,335 deaths in medico-social establishments. 67% of people who died in hospital were 80 years or older.
