LThe curfew decreed in the province of Antwerp came into effect for the first time at 11 p.m. Wednesday evening, as an additional health measure to fight against the spread of the coronavirus. Since that time, horeca establishments throughout the province have closed their doors and everyone has had to stay at home until 6 a.m. on Thursday. Only essential travel has been authorized in the public space.
The curfew was announced Monday evening by the governor of the province of Antwerp, Cathy Berx, as a specific health measure for this territory where a resumption of the coronavirus epidemic is noted. The other measures require, among other things, the wearing of a mask in public places when social distance cannot be respected.
Although the package of measures specific to the province, and other stricter ones decreed for certain municipalities in particular, was announced on Monday evening, the provisions did not come into force until Wednesday evening because legal aspects still had to be settled.
The various local police zones will ensure immediate compliance with the measures, although the way of sanctioning will be further refined in the coming days.
