Coronavirus: Habib Ghedira considers it unlikely that virus mutation will affect vaccine effectiveness

Following the identification of a new strain of the Coronavirus in Britain and Denmark, pulmonologist Habib Ghedira told TAP on Sunday that it is normal for genetic changes to occur in the virus, believing that this mutation is unlikely to affect the effectiveness of anti-Covid-19 vaccines.

He added that the rapid spread of the virus has caused the appearance of genetic changes in the coronavirus, recalling, in this regard, that the seasonal flu registers changes every year depending on the degree of expansion of the disease.

According to Ghedira, it is still too early to know if the new strain is more deadly or causes incurable diseases.

Ghedira considered that the mutation of the virus is unlikely to affect the effectiveness of the anti-Covid-19 vaccines, indicating that the characteristics of the latter, including the American vaccine Pfizer, which Tunisia has decided to import two million doses consist of the production of antibodies targeting the virus so as to strengthen human immunity.

It should be noted that Denmark recently decided to slaughter 15 million farmed mink contaminated by Covid-19, considering that this mutation is characterized by a lower efficiency of human antibodies and therefore threatens the development of a vaccine against Covid-19.

The World Health Organization announced two weeks ago that six countries had reported cases of coronavirus in mink farms.

These are Denmark, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.
