Coronavirus – GLOBAL SUMMARY: 11,000 dead across the planet, governments on the war foot

New assessments, new measures, highlights: review of the latest developments in the Covid-19 pandemic around the world.

Across the planet where Covid-19 has killed more than 11,000 people, governments are on the warpath. But in the small Balkan country, the ruling coalition is on the verge of collapsing after not even two months in command.

EUROPE

The coronavirus pandemic killed 627 people in Italy in the last 24 hours, a new record which brings the total toll beyond 4,000 deaths in the peninsula, the most affected country in the world, announced civil defense on Friday. It is still the Milan region, Lombardy, where hospitals are overwhelmed, which pays the heaviest price, with 381 additional deaths (2,549 in total).

With 4,032 deaths now recorded, Italy has more than 66 deaths per million inhabitants, a proportion which rises to more than 250 for Lombardy, the country’s economic lung. The second most affected country in proportion to its population, Spain is behind with more than 21 deaths per million inhabitants.

In France, the coronavirus epidemic has caused to date the death of 450 patients (78 additional in 24 hours) and forced to hospitalize 5,226 patients, including nearly 1,300 in intensive care, announced Friday the Ministry of Health.

The UK drastically strengthened its response to the pandemic of new coronavirus on Friday, by ordering the closure of pubs, restaurants, cinemas and sports halls and by taking “unprecedented” social measures to offset the economic effects. Switzerland has toughened its measures against the coronavirus on Friday, banning gatherings of more than five people, but it has ruled out any confinement – a measure adopted by other European countries – believing that it was “spectacle politics”.

MIDDLE EAST

AMERICA

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 19,000 cases of coronavirus have been identified in United States, which have more than 220 deaths.

The Brazil declared a state of emergency following the coronavirus pandemic. After the House, the Senate also voted by videoconference on Friday to declare a state of emergency, thereby freeing up resources to fight covid-19. In Brazil, more than 600 people were infected and seven died from the virus.

Argentina has 128 cases of coronavirus and three deaths.

ASIA

Iran An additional 149 deaths from Covid-19 disease were announced on Friday, bringing the official assessment of the new coronavirus epidemic in the country, one of the most affected with Italy and China, to 1,433.

AFRICA

The Democratic Republic of Congo reported on Saturday a first coronavirus-related death in Kinshasa, the third in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as five new confirmed cases, 23 in total since the announcement of a first case on March 10.

The first two deaths in sub-Saharan Africa were announced at Burkina Faso Wednesday and at Gabon Friday.
