Coronavirus first detected in breast milk – health

German virologists have tested an infant and his mother for the first time positive for the coronavirus and also found the genetic makeup of the virus in their breast milk. The question of the infection chain remains open.

Is breast milk a source of infection after all? In addition to droplet infection, transmission by aerosols, i.e. by speaking and breathing, is now considered the overriding main route of infection. No transmission has so far been demonstrated through breastfeeding. Science believed that this was due to the production of antibodies in breast milk, which protects both babies and mothers from viruses and bacteria. Now an infant and his mother have been tested positive for the corona virus for the first time and the genetic makeup of the virus has also been detected in their breast milk.

Scientists led by Jan Münch and Rüdiger Groß from the University of Ulm published their results in the journal The Lancet.

Can the corona virus be transmitted through breastfeeding?

It remains unclear whether the child was infected while breastfeeding despite hygiene measures. Until then, attempts to detect coronavirus in breast milk had been moderately successful. Medical doctors succeeded in proving one infection in 30 infected mothers. This is also related to the complexity of the structure of breast milk, which makes it difficult to get a reliable test result. The contagion potential remains uncertain.

“Our study shows that Sars-CoV-2 can be detected in breastfeeding women with acute infection in breast milk. But we do not yet know how often this is the case, whether the viruses in milk are also infectious and can be transmitted to the baby through breastfeeding, “it said.
