A new strain of the coronavirus has just been discovered in the UK, which could be much more contagious than the previous one. The resort of Verbier, in Valais, is a popular holiday destination for the British. The boss of tourism is worried.
“About 21% of all customers are from Britain,” tourism director Simon Wiget told Keystone-ATS on Sunday, confirming information that appeared in the online edition of Blick on the same day. After the Swiss, the English are the second most numerous group in the Valais resort.
Few English people currently in Verbier
Simon Wiget is on the alert. “This mutated virus naturally worries us,” he said. “But at the moment, we still don’t know enough about it.” He will talk about it at the daily meeting on Monday and discuss the situation with his team. “If the new variant of the virus poses a problem, we will take the necessary measures”, explains the boss of tourism.
Few Britons are currently in Verbier. “Due to the lockdown in place since November 5, we have a lot fewer guests from Great Britain this year,” he noted. At the moment, the French and the Swiss are the most numerous in the Valais resort.
“Traditionally, the English come rather after Christmas”, continues the director of tourism. At the moment, the British are still allowed to come to Switzerland without a quarantine requirement.
Several countries have already decided to suspend flights with Great Britain like the Netherlands. Belgium plans to do the same as well as with rail traffic. For its part, Germany is considering “seriously” to stop flights with Great Britain.
