Chloroquine, effective or not against coronavirus …? Although the debate is raging within the scientific community, a brand new clinical trial around the drug carried out at the Montpellier University Hospital may well put an end to it. We explain to you.

The Chloroquine as a treatment to combat coronavirus, waiting to find a vaccine? While a heated debate is currently taking place within the scientific community, and after the professor Didier raoult, infectious disease specialist and director of the Mediterranean Infection Foundation launched the first studies, oh so much criticized, on the subject, that should put an end to the questions of all. And for good reason, the Montpellier CHU announced to set up a new clinical test on the efficacy or otherwise of the current treatment – a mixture ofhydroxychloroquine associated withazithromycin, An antibiotic – against Covid-19.

What will this study consist of more precisely? Titled Covidoc, it has received the green light from the competent authorities, namely the CPP, the Personal Protection Committee and the ANSM, the drug safety agency, and will test the treatment hydroxychloroquine / azithromycin sure 150 patients from various hospitals in the south of France (Narbonne, Montpellier, Béziers, Nîmes, Sète, Perpignan and Rodez). Among the 150 patients, a certain number will not receive the entire medication protocol, without informing them or the doctors treating them. The objective: avoid interpretations, for a stricter and more reliable analysis.

Another factor in this new clinical trial is the patient profile. These must have been tested positive for coronavirus have been under the age of 75 and have suffered for at least ten days “of a moderate form of infection“not requiring intubation and follow-up in intensive care, as explained by our colleagues at Le Point.

A study during which the doctors will observe the evolution of the condition of the patients, but also measure the viral load, make regular X-rays of the lungs, as well as electrocardiograms, also regular. Note that 43 cases of people who had serious side effects – including four deaths – were reported to theANSM after taking Chloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19.
