Coronavirus and Spanish Flu: Telling the Truth – Health

Some lessons can be learned from the experience of the Spanish flu for the current corona crisis. Perhaps the most important of these: political tactics must not determine action.

In many places, the clinics could no longer catch the patients, gyms became hospital rooms, and bed after bed stretched for many meters. The coffins became scarce in New York. In a heartbreaking newspaper article, a father asked for a box – any – to put his dead child in; if necessary, he would dig the grave himself. At some point the virus reached the British Prime Minister, who was unable to breathe on his own. Experts debated how helpful face masks were. The people on the streets and squares, on the telephones and kitchen tables, were still deeply divided. Some considered all worries to be exaggerations, spoke of a “fashion sickness”. The Lombard Corriere della Sera, who printed the new death numbers every day, was accused of causing panic. Other people fell into terrible fear on their own and tried the most absurd means to relieve the suffering. The suffering was the Spanish flu.
