In the context of an interview with Repubblica, the infectious disease expert Massimo Andreoni explained all the existing difficulties in distinguishing flu and Covid. The President of the Italian Society of Infectious Diseases has made it clear that no doctor can make the diagnosis without a swab. At the same time, making a swab for each fever becomes complicated. In the words of the expert, given this substantial difficulty, “eliminating millions of cases of flu with the vaccine would be desirable”.

The infectious disease specialist therefore focused on vaccines, which are extremely fundamental. During this winter, waiting for the vaccine for Covid, we will have 40% more doses for the flu vaccine. According to the expert, it is important to do as much as possible. Not only that, it is also important to start from the end of September, beginning of October, instead of November, as usual.

This year, he did know Massimo Andreoni, thanks to the masks and the distancing, the flu, whose strains are usually isolated when it is summer with us, was milder, without particular problems.

Regarding the discourse of the distinction between Covid and flu, the expert confirms that yes, there are also tests for the flu and are valid diagnostic tools. These tests are used in the hospital when you are facing a serious infection, to understand which organism is involved. However, these tests are similar to swabs, so both tests should be done when faced with symptoms. In the end, there would be no great gains in the health care system commitment.

Regarding the question about spray vaccines for children, Andreoni he replies clearly: “the evidence is that the spray is less effective than injecting vaccines, those with the syringe”.
