Coronavirus | A woman infected all the customers of a cafeteria, but not the waiters who wore a mask

On August 8, a woman infected with the COVID-19 visited a coffee shop Starbucks located in the town of Paju, in South Korea. Another 55 customers were also in the establishment, according to information from Bloomberg.

Everyone present contracted the virus; However, four waiters working in the cafeteria wearing masks were not infected.

The woman entered the premises around 7:30 p.m. with a friend. They both ordered their drinks on the first floor and then went up to the second, where they chose a table near the stairs, exactly under one of the six air conditioning vents. The woman left at 10:00 p.m.

Shortly after that day, all 55 people in the cafe tested positive for COVID-19. The workers, who, as mentioned, wore masks, in addition to gloves, were not infected.

According to the health authorities of South Korea, customers were more exposed to contagion due to the fact that the masks were removed to drink their drinks. Likewise, the virus was able to spread more quickly due to the air conditioning of the premises.

“This outbreak highlights the important role that masks can play,” Ma Sang Hyuk, an infectious disease pediatrician at Changwon Fatima Hospital, told Bloomberg.

“The masks do not protect you one hundred percent, but it cannot be denied that they are effective”, he pointed.
