The African Football Confederation (CAF) announced this Tuesday the postponement to January 2022 of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) initially planned in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2021, due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

The CAF followed the examples of their equivalents in Europe (Euro Cup) and South America (Copa América), which also delayed their continental tournament by one year, in their cases from 2020 to 2021.

The tournament will be held in Cameroon with 24 teams. The playoffs started before the pandemic could not end.

The next edition of the CAN is held in 2023 in the Ivory CoastAhmad said.

“I am sure there will be a CAN in 2023 as well. I don’t know what date it will take place,” he said in his response to a question about the difficulty of maintaining the competition in January 2023, as originally planned, considering that the Qatar World Cup-2022 ends in December.

In addition to the CAN postponement, which takes place every two years, the CAF President announced changes to the schedule of other African competitions, including the African Nations Championship, the African Champions League and the Confederation Cup. AFP
