Christoph Krupp wants to ensure that more corona vaccine is produced for Germany. He said that before he took up his post as the federal government’s vaccination commissioner on Monday.
“We want to see how we can boost vaccine production.” This is how Christoph Krupp describes his new job as the federal government’s vaccination officer. Germany had ordered enough vaccine through the European Union, but this vaccine also had to be produced. The manufacturers are of good will, said Krupp in the NDR Hamburg Journal. In practice, however, it is a very complex process with supply chains and approval procedures.
Dialogue with the manufacturers of corona vaccine
“We want to support. We are in dialogue with the manufacturers for this,” he said in an interview with Hamburg Journal moderator Jens Riewa. Christoph Krupp was head of the Bergedorf district office for ten years and headed the Hamburg Senate Chancellery for seven years. Most recently he was CEO of the Federal Real Estate Agency. Now he is to accelerate the production of corona vaccines in Germany with the new task force in the Federal Ministry of Economics.
Money for delivery commitments
The task force will consist of ten people from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Ministry of Health. What to do in the first week: “Talk to the manufacturer first”. There are already suggestions as to which companies could still be included in the supply and production chain.
Krupp explained the problem with this: “Before expanding production capacity, manufacturers ask themselves: How long does an acceptance guarantee apply to us?” Here one could talk about whether one would also pay money for reserve capacities and speed up the approval process. “The state has several options to support this,” said Krupp.
According to him, it is likely that five vaccines will be available by May instead of three today. In addition to the vaccines already available from BioNTech / Pfizer, Moderna and Astra / Zenica, these are vaccines from Johnson and Johnson and CureVac. The question of whether a vaccination offer can be made as planned to all people who wish by the beginning of August was left open by Krupp. It is his job to secure these plans. But it is a complicated process to ramp up manufacturing capacities.
