Lauterbach presents a concept for healthcare kiosks nationwide

Hamburg-Billstedt as a model for the whole republic: Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) wants to present the key points for setting up health kiosks throughout Germany this afternoon. They are intended to serve as contact points for patients in parts of the city without medical assistance. Lauterbach visits the Billstedter Health Kiosk, which has been in existence since 2017. It is considered a good example of a low-threshold offering in six different languages, including Turkish, Russian and Polish. In the facility, people are examined on the recommendation of a doctor, counseled on health issues and, if necessary, referred for further treatment. In the past there were simple corona vaccination campaigns without registration.

GPs complain about “communication chaos” with vaccines

The German Association of General Practitioners has asked for clear recommendations from the Standing Commission for Vaccinations (Stiko) on the new corona vaccines. “The fact that adapted vaccines are now available is very positive news,” said the association’s federal president, Ulrich Weigeldt, of the “Rheinische Post” in Düsseldorf. “The communication chaos surrounding the various adapted vaccines is less pleasant.” Patients wonder whether it makes sense to be vaccinated with the BA.1 adapted vaccine in early September or whether to wait for the BA.4 / BA.5 adapted vaccine, Weigeldt said. “Here, a very timely clear recommendation from Stiko is needed, which general practitioners can also use as a guide.” So far there is no information about it. On Monday, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) announced the delivery of a vaccine adapted to the BA.1 viral variant for early September. EU-wide approval is still pending, but is expected.

The president of the German Medical Association, Klaus Reinhardt, called this “good news” in the newspapers of the media group Funke. Clinical studies by the manufacturers showed that the adapted vaccine produced significantly more antibodies to omicron and thus immune protection could be increased. “But the best vaccine doesn’t help if it stays,” Reinhardt said. Elderly people and patients with immunodeficiency and severe previous illnesses should be vaccinated quickly for the fourth time, although further new vaccines against the BA.4 and BA.5 variants are expected to be approved in a few weeks, Reinhardt recommended. The Stiko must assess whether even young and healthy people should increase their immune protection by getting vaccinated with the new vaccines.
