A flu, but not much more than that. The complaints of corona patient Sebastiaan (31) were initially not too bad. Until he got pneumonia a few days ago. “I underestimated corona.”
Sebastiaan (full name known to editors) works in a hospital. He is now on the mend, although he still coughs a lot while talking. The past few days it felt like he was getting hot air while breathing, he says. “Every morning I had a lot of mucus. During the day that turned into a dry cough. My whole chest was sore.”
Sebastiaan suspects that he was not sick enough and therefore got pneumonia on top of the other corona complaints. The Amsterdammer had just returned from winter sports in Austria with five friends. After the first symptoms, he went into quarantine with his family. His wife had taken care of their children (3 and 1 year old) during the holiday week. “I felt silly. I wanted to help her at home even though I wasn’t feeling well.”
Infected bartender
Sebastiaan contracted the virus in the Austrian ski village of Ischgl, as did three others from his group of friends. The source of the contamination is Café Kitzloch, he thinks. The four friends were there on the last holiday night. Suddenly all the lights went on after one beer. Everyone had to leave the building. “We thought it was strange, but didn’t think much of it,” says Sebastiaan.
The next day the friends left for the Netherlands by car. What they’ve never seen is that there was a note on Café Kitzloch’s door that day. “That the bar is closed because of corona. The bartender turned out to be infected with corona. So we didn’t know that.”
