A corona outbreak in the Chinese province of Shenzen is causing new problems in global shipping. The Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is diverting numerous ships because the port of Yantian is partially closed.
“That gives us great grief,” said Hapag-Lloyd spokesman Nils Haupt in an interview with NDR 90.3. In the past few days, the Chinese authorities have registered several corona cases among dock workers. The port of Yantian handles around three times as many containers per year as Hamburg.

As a consequence of the Corona cases, some of the terminals are now completely closed for more than two weeks. Containers stored there may not be moved. Only a small workforce works in the rest of the port.
Long waiting times – ships diverted
This leads to waiting times of weeks. In addition to Hapag-Lloyd, almost all other large shipping companies have also diverted ships. Hapag-Lloyd alone has four liner services that connect Yantian and Hamburg. Importers in Europe are now likely to have to wait much longer for their goods. How long cannot be foreseen at the moment.
