Corona: Number of Omicron cases in Thuringia unclear

In Thuringia, twelve cases of the Omikron variant are currently officially known. This comes from the latest figures from the Robert Koch Institute on Thursday. However, according to the Thuringian Ministry of Health, it is unclear how many people in Thuringia are actually infected with an Omicron variant. The reason is that only five percent of the samples are tested for mutations of the corona virus in the case of new infections.

The head of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Thuringia (KVT) Annette Rommel assumes that more than half of the corona infections in Thuringia are due to the Omikron variant. In doing so, she relies on the experience in her family doctor’s practice.

Accordingly, people become infected faster, even those who have been vaccinated. Especially if the last vaccination was a long time ago, the risk of getting sick increases, said Rommel. In addition, the entire environment is almost always infected. She now hopes that vaccines against this variant will soon be developed. The prospect is for April, said Rommel.
