Lower Saxony: GEW calls for corona tests at the beginning of the school year

According to the Education and Science Union (GEW), corona tests are necessary at the start of the new school year at the end of August in Lower Saxony. After a so-called test week, an obligation of two to three tests per week could then be necessary for everyone, provided that the infection rate will probably be high after numerous holiday contacts and with a view to the autumn, said the deputy GEW state chairman Holger Westphal of the German press agency .

It is not yet known whether a mandatory test will be imposed. The Ministry of Education announced in July that this should be about two weeks before the start of the new school year. The Greens parliamentary group leader Julia Willie Hamburg spoke out in favor of a two-week test requirement for students and teachers. After these two weeks, students would have to continue to be provided with tests. “In the case of high incidences, a mask requirement must also be considered,” said Hamburg. Schools also need more ventilation systems. SPD education politician Stefan Politze explained that it was still too early for a decision in view of the dynamic infection process. The CDU and FDP spoke out against compulsory testing. CDU education politician Christian Fühner said: “If minor symptoms appear, a test should be carried out before going to school. In our opinion, a test is not necessary in the current situation. The mask is recommended for your own protection.” FDP politician Björn Försterling emphasized that there is currently no need for compulsory testing. Mandatory testing would be the next step.

153 deaths reported nationwide

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of known infections in Germany has increased by 59,888 to a total of over 31.4 million so far. This is 14,766 fewer cases than on Thursday a week ago, when 74,645 infections were recorded. The seven-day incidence drops to 354.5 from 366.8 the previous day. The RKI reports 153 more deaths related to the corona virus. The known total is 145,394.

Note on the current numbers: The incidence values do not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests are included in the official statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

Hanse Sail Rostock before the starting signal

Before the 31st edition of the Hanse Sail begins today in Rostock and Warnemünde, the organizers have informed about the highlights and special features of the sailing event. After the Corona-related cancellation in 2020 and the smaller anniversary edition last year, the Hanse Sail is back this year with full rigging. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the maritime folk festival in Rostock and Warnemünde over the next four days. “The Hanse Sail manages to make the city known far beyond the national borders,” said Rostock’s acting mayor Steffen Bockhahn (left). 111 traditional ships come to the quayside, including the German Navy’s training sailing ship, the “Gorch Fock”, for the first time in seven years. The Hanse Sail will be opened in the afternoon in Warnemünde by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD).

Stubble market starts again in Vechta

After a two-year Corona break, one of the most traditional folk festivals in Germany is taking place again today in Vechta: The Stoppelmarkt begins in the afternoon with the parade and the subsequent official opening. The SPD federal chairman Lars Klingbeil will give the speech at the city reception in the marquee on Monday. On this day, the hustle and bustle begins at 7 a.m. with the traditional horse and cattle market. Party star Mickie Krause should be on stage at 10 p.m. Before the forced Corona break, around 800,000 people came to the Stubble Market every year. The market was first mentioned in documents in 1298. Because of a plague epidemic in Vechta in 1577, the market was moved to an open field outside of the city, where the stubble remains of the harvest were still standing. Since then the market has been called the Stubble Market.
