Epidemiologist: full capacity in football stadiums is justifiable

Infection epidemiologist Andreas Podbielski considers full capacity utilization in German football stadiums to be justifiable despite the high number of corona infections. “If you get involved in full arenas, mass infections are predetermined,” said the professor of microbiology, virology and hygiene at the University of Rostock of the German Press Agency. And the Sars-CoV2 variants that are circulating are probably more contagious than many respiratory pathogens. “But the health effects are no longer that different from those of influenza.” In this respect, one has to ask oneself why Sars-CoV2 should be particularly emphasized. “Personally, I think that the infections can now be allowed to run,” said Podbielski. This applies as long as no new variants leading to greater health effects become established. The new Bundesliga season begins on August 5 with FC Bayern Munich playing Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt. For the first time since 2019, the clubs are starting a season without corona restrictions.

Autumn strategy: Expert commission presents expert opinion

In the debate about the Corona course for the fall, a commission of experts presented an evaluation of previous state restrictions at noon. The legally prescribed evaluation is primarily intended to shed light on the requirements within the framework of the “epidemic situation of national importance” that has been in force for several months. The traffic light coalition has agreed to wait for the scientific assessment before deciding on possible further everyday requirements for the autumn. The health ministers of the federal states want to position themselves at a special conference today. Scientists from various disciplines belong to the expert committee.

After the Corona break: Schützenfest in Hanover with adjustments

After a two-year forced break due to the pandemic, the Schützenfest in Hanover starts today – without Corona requirements. But because the pandemic is not over yet, there are adjustments on the fairground. “We have increased the distances between the rides, the paths are wider and there are many open beer gardens,” said shooting president Paul-Eric Stolle before the start. “Of course there are also marquees.” Everyone can decide for themselves whether they want to celebrate inside. The ten-day folk festival in the Lower Saxony state capital attracted around one million visitors a year before Corona. After this dry spell, at least 800,000 guests are expected, said Stolle.

Lower Saxony: seven-day incidence rises to 980.3

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) published the following corona numbers for the state of Lower Saxony this morning: The statewide seven-day incidence of confirmed new infections per 100,000 inhabitants is currently 980.3 – after 965.8 yesterday and 861.4 last Friday. 14,617 new infections with the virus were currently registered (previous day: 18,450 / previous week: 16,159). With four more deaths related to corona diseases, the total number in Lower Saxony has risen to 9,688 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the RKI.

Incidence in Schleswig-Holstein at 1,048.2

The seven-day incidence of new corona infections in Schleswig-Holstein is over 1,000 for the second day in a row. The number of new infections registered per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days is 1,048.2 (previous day: 1,032.8). A week earlier the incidence was 882.8. In a nationwide comparison, according to the figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Schleswig-Holstein is again the state with the highest corona incidence – and the only one with a value over 1,000. 5,753 new corona cases were reported, compared to 6,163 a week earlier. According to the information, 409 people were now treated in connection with the corona virus in the hospitals. A week ago there were 339, at the beginning of the month only 237. RKI registers 113,099 new corona infections – incidence at 682.7

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence this morning as 682.7 (previous day: 668.6 / previous week: 618.2). The health authorities in Germany recently reported 113,099 new corona infections (previous week: 108,190) and 84 deaths (previous week: 90) to the RKI within one day.

Note on the current figures from the countries: The incidence values do not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests are included in the official statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

New test rules now apply in MV

The regulations have changed in the Corona test centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. One of the most important innovations is that people with symptoms typical of Covid 19 should go to the doctor to undergo a free test, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday in Schwerin. The new federal ordinance also stipulates that residents, those cared for and visitors to medical and care facilities or children under the age of five can take free quick tests in test stations. If you still want to be tested in the test center without a reason, you have to bear the full costs. People who have contact with a person who is particularly at risk from the virus on the day of the test or who attend an event indoors on the day of the test are entitled to a so-called three-euro citizen test. “This also applies if the Corona warning app indicates an increased risk,” said Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD). She added that home self-tests are an important protective tool. If a positive self-test is presented, a PCR test is free that creates certainty.
