Corona news: mayors ask for long-term corona vision

The national number of corona cases is not going up anymore, but it is not really going down either. In the past day, 21,053 positive results of corona tests were passed on to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). It is the 20th time in the past 21 days that between 20,000 and 24,000 new cases have been registered in one day.

The only day that the number remained below that limit was due to a malfunction. In the past seven days, RIVM received 152,144 reports of positive tests. On average, that equates to 21,735 positive tests per day. That average has been pretty stable over the past few days. The total for the past week is about 3 percent lower than the total for the seven days before.

It is the sixth day in a row that the number of positive tests has fallen on a weekly basis. Before that, it had risen 58 days in a row. This indicates that the Netherlands is now just past a peak. Last day, RIVM received 34 reports that a corona patient has died as a result of the infection. For a Monday, that’s the highest number since January 25.

RIVM generally reports fewer deaths on Mondays than later in the week. When a corona patient dies during the weekend, this is often reported in the course of Monday. RIVM will then publish this in Tuesday’s figures. The fact that the deaths of these people have now been reported does not mean that they died within the past day. In the past week, the institute registered 353 deaths, an average of about 50 per day.
