This time the human being is legal again. So it will be exciting to see how the Delta variant fares in a heavily vaccinated city of eight million. After all, this easily transmissible variant made up 23 percent of infections in New York last week.
So far, the numbers have been encouraging: even if the delta infections increase, the overall infections continue to decrease. Corona cases, hospital admissions, deaths – everything remains extremely low.
Unlike in many other parts of the country, vaccination refusals are limited in New York. This is probably also because we saw with our own eyes or went through how dangerous the virus can be.
And those who do not get vaccinated mostly live in neighborhoods that have previously rejected the masks. Anyone who did not wear a mask in New York in 2020 has a high probability of catching the virus. In individual quarters, the antibodies and thus the contamination were already up to 50 percent last August. So there is a little immunity there even without a vaccine.
Will that be enough to withstand the Delta virus, which has recently been spreading in the USA as well? We will monitor this in these weeks and keep you up to date. Personally, of course, I hope that New York will prove as a major field test this time that the vaccinations protect us and that we can lead a normal life again. That could perhaps convince many vaccination doubters.
