Corona New York: Delta variant despite herd immunity?

New York Our city remains a major field test. Last spring, New York was an involuntary experiment into what happens when people are exposed to the virus out of ignorance – without masks, without social distancing. The result was devastating. This summer, New York will once again be used as an experimental laboratory. This time for the chances of the delta variant if there is already herd immunity from vaccines and contamination.

We achieved a vaccination rate of more than 70 percent in the city two weeks ago and are therefore allowed to do pretty much anything as we used to. We are not only allowed to drop the masks outside. Vaccinated persons are also allowed to move freely inside.

In the restaurant, in the cinema or at a concert, the piked no longer have to put on a mask. Usually they don’t even have to show their vaccination certificate. The masks are still compulsory for everyone in the subway. But in shops and other private activities, the owners decide.

The city is still battered by the pandemic, especially economically, but the nightlife districts in the East and West Village or in Williamsburg in Brooklyn have long since party again. On Saturday evenings the traffic jams on the Brooklyn Bridge towards Manhattan like in the old days. Some commentators compare the mood to the post-Prohibition era, when alcohol was legal again after many years.

This time the human being is legal again. So it will be exciting to see how the Delta variant fares in a heavily vaccinated city of eight million. After all, this easily transmissible variant made up 23 percent of infections in New York last week.

So far, the numbers have been encouraging: even if the delta infections increase, the overall infections continue to decrease. Corona cases, hospital admissions, deaths – everything remains extremely low.

Unlike in many other parts of the country, vaccination refusals are limited in New York. This is probably also because we saw with our own eyes or went through how dangerous the virus can be.

And those who do not get vaccinated mostly live in neighborhoods that have previously rejected the masks. Anyone who did not wear a mask in New York in 2020 has a high probability of catching the virus. In individual quarters, the antibodies and thus the contamination were already up to 50 percent last August. So there is a little immunity there even without a vaccine.

Will that be enough to withstand the Delta virus, which has recently been spreading in the USA as well? We will monitor this in these weeks and keep you up to date. Personally, of course, I hope that New York will prove as a major field test this time that the vaccinations protect us and that we can lead a normal life again. That could perhaps convince many vaccination doubters.
