Last April, almost nothing was going on at Emmishofer Zoll in Kreuzlingen, as the Thurgau Civil Engineering Office announced on Monday. Although customs remained open to authorized persons, the measuring point recorded a drop in traffic of 87 percent compared to April 2019. The numbers remained lower than in the previous year until the end of the year, December closed with a minus of 39.6 percent.
The pandemic changed the volume of traffic not only in the border regions, but also in the cities. In the car park Passage in Frauenfeld, the frequency fell by 12.45 percent last year. The slump was most noticeable from March to May and in November. Even during the easing in summer, the decline was more noticeable than the canton average.
The traffic situation was very different at the popular excursion destinations on Lake Constance. The measuring point at the Landstrasse roundabout in Altnau recorded an increase of 21.9 percent in September. The increase in the summer months was even more pronounced than usual, as it is said. In April, traffic fell by only 10.7 percent, which is less than the canton average.
Viewed across the entire canton, the 2020 traffic statistics show a decrease of 5.7 percent compared to the previous year. The numbers varied widely from month to month and from place to place.
