The increase in the number of employment insurance subscribers fell back to 100,000 last month. In particular, the decrease in employment insurance was concentrated in the 20s and 30s, and it was revealed that the damage from the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) was more severe for the youth.

– According to the “January Employment Administration Statistics” released by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on the 8th, the number of employment insurance subscribers last month was 13835,000, an increase of only 151,000 compared to January last year. In September-November last year, they all exceeded 300,000, but in December last year (239,000 people), when Corona 19 re-proliferated, it remained in the 200,000 range. However, as intensive quarantine measures such as social distancing continued until January of this year, the increase in the number of employment insurance subscribers declined to 100,000 last month.

– By age group, the damage was concentrated on young people under the age of 29. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the increase in the number of employment insurance subscribers under the age of 29 increased by 2,000 in December of last year. But last month, it turned to a drop of 25,000. As of January every year, it is the largest decline in 11 years since January 2010 (-62,000 people). The decline was the most since August last year (-59,000 people), when the social distancing was reinforced on a monthly basis. Those in their 30s, heavily affected by manufacturing jobs, maintained a similar decline last month (-57,000 people) following last December (-56,000 people). “It is difficult to increase new jobs when the economy is bad in places where the job market is stiff like Korea,” said Sung Tae-yoon, a professor of economics at Yonsei University.
