Hasselt has been affected by the corona virus with five deaths and eighteen infections. It seems that a general practitioner, a minister and a choir conductor have infected part of the Overijssel town.
“I feel like I’m in a bad dream, but it all really happens”, sighs Mayor Eddy Bilder at RTV East.
The monumental town in the Kop van Overijssel has more than 7,000 inhabitants. It is a close-knit community. Our-knows-us is the adage. But now all life is out. Nobody dares to go out on the street.
Within a short time, five people, all over the age of 75, died. Corona was diagnosed in three. In the other two cases, no test was taken, but according to their GP, they too succumbed to the effects of the virus. Officially, eighteen people are infected, eleven are in intensive care. However, because not everyone is tested, Hasselt assumes that many more people are infected.
The pastor is doing better
It is very likely that people who are fully engaged in social life have infected their placeholders. General practitioner Erik van Gijssel, a minister and the conductor of a choir have the virus. They were in full contact with the elderly in particular. The pastor is doing better now, the choir director is still ill.
Mayor Bilder has announced strict controls. Police and extraordinary investigating officers will ensure that everyone adheres to strict national guidelines. One and a half meters away. No group formation. If one person has a fever, the whole family must stay at home. “Additional agents have been released for this,” says the mayor.
The current figures inspire so much fear that the people of Hasselt are already fully adhering to the rules, Bilder sees: “I am standing here at the window of my office and have an overview of several streets. By now someone just happens to cycle by. For the rest I really don’t see anyone. “
