Corona incidence in Germany rises to 113

DThe nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has risen again. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Tuesday morning, the value increased to 113.0. The previous day it was 110.1. 10,473 new infections were registered within one day.

The number of deaths in Germany related to a corona infection increased by 128 cases to 95,245. According to the RKI, the total number of infections detected since the beginning of the pandemic is 4,483,203.

The incidence value, which indicates the number of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days, has been rising continuously for a week and a half. Last Friday, the incidence exceeded 100 for the first time since May. For a long time, the incidence value was the decisive factor for the federal and state corona measures. Because of the progress made in the vaccination campaign, other values are now playing a greater role, in particular the number of corona patients in hospitals.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Tuesday at 2.95 (Monday: 2.77). With the indicator, it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with a delay. A nationwide threshold as to when the situation is to be viewed critically is not provided for the hospitalization incidence, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around Christmas time at around 15.5.

1.6 million people have booster shots

In Germany, 66.3 percent of people are now vaccinated against the corona virus. That’s around 55.1 million people, according to the RKI. According to this, 76.8 percent of all adults and 40.3 percent of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 have full vaccination protection. Almost 57.5 million people, or 69.2 percent of the total population, have been vaccinated against Corona at least once. So far, 1.6 million people have received a booster vaccination.

On average, around 125,000 Covid vaccinations per day were carried out in Germany in the past seven days – on Monday there were 96,000, including around 38,000 second vaccinations and 36,000 boosters.

The RKI assumes that more adults are probably vaccinated than the data suggests. A report at the beginning of October stated that the rate for those aged 18 and over who had been vaccinated once and fully was likely to be up to 5 percentage points higher.

The Vaccination Standing Committee recommends booster vaccinations for people over 70, nurses and medical staff who have direct contact with patients, people who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and for people with a weakened immune system.

Call for booster shots

In view of the increasing corona incidences, politicians and experts are in favor of even more third-party vaccinations against Covid-19 for older people and risk groups. The so-called booster vaccinations can usually be administered six months after the second peak so that further antibodies are formed. “Booster vaccinations for vulnerable groups are urgently needed, especially in view of the increasing numbers,” said Dirk Heinrich, national chairman of the Virchow Association of resident doctors, of the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung. “Unfortunately, this is not uniformly regulated nationwide, so that there are delays in some places.”
