Corona current: Epidemiologist considers lockdown relaxation possible from the end of May

WHO: Majority of corona deaths in Europe were over 60 years old

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 95 percent of people who died from coronavirus in Europe were over 60 years old. Recent statistics showed that 30,098 people were reported to have died in Europe, particularly in Italy, France and Spain, said Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe. More than half were over 80.

At the same time, Kluge warned against the assumption that Covid-19 only affects older people. Age is not the only risk factor that can favor a severe form of the virus, said Kluge. “The mere idea that Covid-19 only affects the elderly is factually wrong,” said Kluge at an online press conference in Copenhagen.

The statements were similar to those of WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. According to the WHO, 10 to 15 percent of people under the age of 50 with the lung disease have a moderate to severe form. “Serious cases of the disease have been seen in teenagers or their 20s, many of whom needed intensive care and some unfortunately died,” said Kluge.

More than 80 percent of fatal coronavirus cases would have had at least one chronic illness, such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. At the same time, there are reports of people over 100 who were hospitalized for Covid-19 and have now fully recovered.
