Corona crisis: Von der Leyen does not recommend booking summer vacations

The extensive contact restrictions in the corona pandemic are already significantly restricting German travel – a condition that is likely to continue for a while. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen currently advises against booking this year’s summer vacation. “I advise to wait with such plans. No one can make reliable predictions for July and August,” said von der Leyen of the “Bild am Sonntag” (“BamS”).

She expressed skepticism about the federal government’s decision that customers should only receive a voucher for trips that they cannot take due to the corona pandemic. “Throughout Europe, people have a purely legal choice as to whether they want the money or a voucher,” the head of the agency affirmed the opinion of the EU Commission has already made it clear in the past weeks.

However, the head of the commission appealed to customers who could afford to opt out of a payment: “In this crisis, everyone needs solidarity. Those who are financially viable should not insist on money, but should use vouchers to help travel companies can bridge these difficult weeks. ” The demands of customers should remain secure.

Less traffic over Easter

Deutsche Bahn has seen a slump in passenger numbers for weeks. According to the “BamS”, it registered just under 300,000 long-distance bookings for Easter. In the previous year there were still 1.5 million. This means that bookings are around a fifth compared to Easter 2019 – at least slightly higher than in the past few weeks than the train only 10 to 15 percent of the usual level of passengers on their long-distance trains counted. According to this, 2,000 trains run daily in freight transport, plus special trains primarily with food and medical goods.

The ADAC breakdown helpers are currently far less busy. They were used 8753 times on Maundy Thursday, 3951 times on Good Friday. This is a decrease of 41 percent in each case compared to the previous year.

Union is growing significantly

The Union, on the other hand, is one of the profiteers of the corona crisis. According to a recent survey by the Kantar polling institute, the CDU and CSU are in better standing for the “BamS” in favor of voters than they have been since September 2017. In the Sunday trend, the Union parties increased by four percentage points compared to the previous week and now come to 37 percent. The Union has thus gained 13 percentage points within five weeks.

The Union is soaring at the expense of almost all other parties represented in the Bundestag: the Greens lose two points and are now 16 percent behind the SPD (17 percent), which loses one point despite government participation. It is the worst value for the Greens since March 2019. The AfD loses one point and now comes to ten percent, the worst value since September 2017. The FDP remains at six percent and thus at a level that was last so low in May 2017 was. Only the Left Party remains stable at nine percent.
