Corona Attacks Chinese Ports, Piles of Containers Mount

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Pandemic covid-19 has disrupted the process of sending goods from one of the port important in China the southern part, namely Yantian Port. Delivery of goods is projected to take up to months, so it will hamper the year-end holiday shopping process.

Quotes CNN Business, Friday (18/6), chaos has occurred since last month. This is precisely when authorities in Guangdong, southern China, canceled flights and suspended trade along its coastline in an effort to control COVID-19.

Yantian Port handles the goods that will fill 36,000 20-foot containers every day. However, the port was closed for almost a week at the end of May 2021.

Currently, the port has begun to open. However, Yantian Port is still operating below capacity, creating a huge pile.

In fact, the stack at Yantian Port has expanded to other container ports in Guangdong, including Shekou, Chiwan and Nansha. All of them are in Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Peter Sand, Bimco’s Chief Shipping Analyst, said the pile of goods at Yantian Port also added to the disruption in global supply chains that had been under pressure for so long.

“People may not find what they’re looking for on the shelves when they’re shopping for Christmas gifts at the end of the year,” Sands said.

As of last Thursday, more than 50 containers were waiting to dock in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong. This is the largest pile since 2019.
