The corona app can be downloaded since last night. The app notifies the user if he or she has been in the vicinity of someone who has been diagnosed with corona infection. A trial with the app and Twente and Drenthe will start today.
From September the app will also work in the rest of the Netherlands. Brenno de Winter, responsible for security and privacy of the app, points out the security checks that are still being done. ‘There are still a number of legal issues regarding privacy. You have to imagine that it is a huge project. But the privacy by design is good, says the Dutch Data Protection Authority. ‘ Use of the app is voluntary; information from and about the users is also not stored.

The choice was made for Twente and Drenthe, after Rotterdam was also explicitly eligible for the trial, says De Winter. But there the fear of crowds was too great. ‘There is a good chance that the pressure will increase briefly in the beginning. But that’s the sour apple you have to go through if you want to jump forward and warn people a few days earlier. But they found that a bit exciting in Rotterdam and I understand that. ‘
