South Korea Sees Fourth Straight Week of Rising COVID-19 Cases – Health officials report a 2.4 percentage point increase in COVID-19 cases over the past week, reaching 22.5% as of August 9, 2025. This marks the fourth consecutive week of rising infections, raising concerns about a potential summer wave.
The Pengki Office, a division of the South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, attributes the increase to seasonal factors, including increased indoor activity during the summer holiday season and warmer temperatures.They predict this upward trend will continue through August. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever or sore throat are advised to seek medical attention and self-isolate until recovery.
COVID-19 Infection Prevention Measures.
Lim seung-kwan, head of the Disease Control and Prevention Division at the Pengki Office, emphasized the importance of practicing proper “cough etiquette,” covering the mouth and nose with the inside of the elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
Health officials are closely monitoring the domestic and international COVID-19 situation. A joint task force meeting, involving representatives from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and relevant medical associations, is scheduled to assess the summer COVID-19 trends and evaluate the availability of treatment options and hospital beds. The KDCA is currently coordinating with major hospitals in Seoul, including Seoul National University Hospital and Severance Hospital, to ensure adequate capacity.
