Corning launches Victus 2 protective glass, better protect against drops

American Corning creates the glass that covers almost all smartphones, often the back too. With each new generation, Corning tries to make glass stronger so it can better protect screens from scratches and drops.

Corning today unveiled its latest protective glass Gorilla glass 2 – the continuation of first Food introduced just over two years ago. The new glass better protects against falling on hard surfaces.

According to Corning, the Victus 2 should be able to make the screens survive drops of up to three feet onto “a surface equivalent to concrete.” In laboratory tests, the protective glass still survived drops of up to two meters onto a surface that matches asphalt, just like the first Victus. Scratch resistance should also be as high as before.

In its press release, Corning says today’s smartphones are 15 percent heavier and have up to 10 percent larger screens than just four years ago. The company boasts that their protective glass is in just over eight billion units from over 45 major brands.

With more sophisticated and varied designs, today’s smartphones are nearly 15% heavier and screen sizes up to 10% larger than they were four years ago, increasing both the stress on the cover glass and the likelihood of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines resistance for consumers and OEMs.
