Copyright puts an end to the JRR Token cryptocurrency

The estate of the British author JRR Tolkien has managed to put a stop to JRR Token, a new cryptocurrency launched in August by Matthew Jensen from Florida.

According to Matthew Jensen’s lawyers, this is not a copyright infringement, despite the choice of name and lots of references to The Lord of the Rings. Among other things, a ring and a magician with Gandalf’s appearance can be seen on the cryptocurrency’s website, reports Ars Technica.

A court has now ruled that the domain name JRRToken.com will go to the estate and that there may be no references to JRR Tolkien’s work on sites and social media that highlight Matthew Jensen’s cryptocurrency.

Whether the cryptocurrency will survive under a new name remains to be seen.
