Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows Gains Access to Email, Document Creation Capabilities
Redmond, WA – october 10, 2024 – Microsoft is expanding teh functionality of Copilot on Windows, enabling connections to popular email and cloud storage services and adding the ability to generate and export Office documents directly from user prompts. The updates, currently rolling out to Windows Insiders, aim to make the AI assistant a more integrated and productive tool for everyday tasks.
Users can now opt-in to connect Copilot to OneDrive, Outlook, Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts through the copilot Windows app’s settings. This allows Copilot to search and retrieve information from these services in response to user queries. Furthermore, Copilot can now create editable Word, PowerPoint, Excel, or PDF files from responses exceeding 600 characters, triggered by prompts like ”Export this text to a Word document” or ”Create an Excel file from this table.”
“Just ask Copilot, ‘Export this text to a Word document’ or ‘Create an Excel file from this table,’ and Copilot will create the file for you,” Microsoft stated in a Thursday blog post. “With just a prompt, you can instantly turn ideas, notes, and data into shareable and editable documents with no extra steps or tools required.”
The rollout is gradual, meaning not all Windows Insider Program participants will receive the updates immediately. Microsoft is actively soliciting feedback through the Copilot app’s profile icon, encouraging users to submit their thoughts.
These updates follow recent expansions of Copilot’s capabilities, including the release of content-aware copilot Chat to Microsoft 365 apps like Word and Excel for business customers, and the launch of the Gaming Copilot for Windows 11 users aged 18 and older.
