JawaPos.comCigarettes are one type of opium that can harm health and cause various problems. Including the respiratory organs and lungs.
Two of the many diseases that can be prevented by quitting smoking are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2002 showed that COPD ranks 3rd after cardiovascular disease and cancer which is the cause of death in the world.
In Indonesia, it is estimated that 4.8 million people suffer from COPD. That number can increase with the increasing number of smokers. Because 90 percent of people with COPD are smokers or former smokers.
Pulmonary specialist from the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) Aditya Wirawan said, in terms of general symptoms and the degree of COPD shortness scale, starting from degree 0 to degree 4. Grade 0 is no shortness of breath except with strenuous activity, grade 1 is shortness of breath. when walking fast or when walking uphill, grade 2 i.e. walking slower than their peers due to shortness of breath.
“Furthermore, degree 3 appears after walking 100 meters or after walking a few minutes, and degree 4, which is shortness of breath, appears when bathing or dressing,” said Aditya Wirawan as quoted by Antara. Between.
According to Aditya, the shortness of breath experienced by COPD sufferers is caused by changes in the anatomical structure of the lungs. “The lung sacs widen, so that air can easily enter, but the air will be difficult to get out, so that the production of phlegm will increase. This phenomenon is known as the bottle neck,” said Aditya Wirawan through a written statement from RSUI.
To diagnose COPD, he continued, patients should consult a doctor. The doctor will ask you some questions, do an examination, and perform a spirometry test. If found in the early stages, COPD can be more easily treated and not progress to a more severe stage.
Aditya said COPD is a preventable and treatable lung disease. However, it can be dangerous if left untreated. He urges people to check their lung health regularly and avoid harmful substances, one of which is to stop smoking if you are a smoker.
“Besides COPD, lung cancer can also be prevented by avoiding and quitting smoking, especially for smokers,” said Aditya Wirawan.
A lung specialist from Gatut Priyonugroho Hospital added that many people feel that smokers can stay healthy and not get lung cancer. There are also lung cancer sufferers who are not treated but are still alive today.
In fact, according to him, people should look at studies with a larger number of samples. In the midst of the current increasing life expectancy, the trend of disease shifts to non-communicable diseases such as stroke, heart disease, and cancer, including lung cancer.
“This is also accompanied by an increasing number and proportion of smokers,” said Gatut.
Based on data from UNICEF regarding the profile of youth in Indonesia in 2021, as many as 59.7 percent of people start smoking every day under the age of 19. Lung cancer cases in Indonesia ranks third most cancer (8.6 percent), after breast cancer (16.7 percent), and cervical cancer (9.3 percent).
In one year, as many as half of lung cancer patients die. Smoking is one of the factors that contribute to the incidence of cancer.
Cancer is a lump that is malignant, can spread to other places, and damage. Not all lumps are cancerous, so you should consult a doctor first so that it can be diagnosed correctly.
Some harmful substances that can cause cancer and are found in cigarettes among them benzoapiren and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Since the 1970s, these substances have been known to cause cancer in all the animals studied. Namely rats, mice, monkeys, either inhaled or swallowed or injected.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer incidence and cancer death. Active smokers are 4.6 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers.
So, to prevent lung cancer, the main step is to avoid the cause, which is to stop smoking. Cigarettes that can cause cancer are not the result of smoke accumulated in the body, but the substances that slowly damage DNA. Thus, resulting in gene mutations.
In addition, an effort that is no less important is to carry out routine lung health checks. At least once a year.
