Cook Islands report first coronavirus infection | Abroad

The Cook Islands, with approximately 17,000 inhabitants, has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. Of all people who are eligible for corona vaccines, 96 percent are fully vaccinated.

The infected person is a 10-year-old boy who was in quarantine. He and his family returned from abroad on a repatriation flight on Thursday. According to Prime Minister Mark Brown, the positive test shows that the testing policy and preparations for resuming international travel are of value.

The borders of the Cook Islands were closed at the start of the pandemic, but there are now plans to welcome tourists again. The New Zealand travel bubble will resume from January 14, after it was halted earlier this year due to an outbreak in Auckland.
