conversations will sync across multiple devices in real time

WhatsApp is working on a new system to store conversation history on multiple devices at once. So far, it has only been possible to keep messages on one smartphone at a time. This new functionality is closely related to the cross-platform option of the application which is under development.

We have known for several weeks that WhatsApp is working on a feature allowing you to use the same number on multiple devices. It was still unclear how the application intended to get around the biggest obstacle to implementing this feature. Indeed, if the use of the same account on several devices is so far impossible, it is mainly because the application stores the conversations locally on smartphones. According to the WaBetaInfo site, the parade is already all found.

How it works ?

WhatsApp is developing a feature that will allow synchronize all messages on multiple smartphones in real time. Message history will always be stored locally and not in the Cloud like Facebook Messenger, Skype or Telegram. When configuring the same number for the first time on another smartphone, tablet or PC, WhatsApp will allow you to perform a history transfer. Subsequently, new messages will automatically synchronize on all devices using the same number. Data will remain encrypted during the process.

Because all conversations (with images, video, audio, etc.) can weigh several gigabytes, transferring backups will require a WiFi connection. Those with a comfortable data plan will therefore not be able to choose to go through their 4G / 5G connection. As a reminder, it will be possible use the same number on up to 4 additional devices.

While waiting for the cross-platform option to be finalized, the current only way to use the app on multiple devices is to go through WhatsApp Web and it works in a totally different way. The main smartphone must indeed remain constantly connected to the Internet. In addition, the interface of WhatsApp Web is far from ergonomic.

Finally, WaBetaInfo announces the upcoming availability of a WhatsApp application for iPads, something that users have been waiting for for several years. It will therefore be possible to use the same WhatsApp account on your iPhone and iPad simultaneously. We don’t know at this time whether cross-platform sync will also solve a particularly annoying problem: transfer of WhatsApp backups between Android and iOS. The information remains to be confirmed.
