The twenty outbreaks of fires originated last Sunday in the north of the island of Tenerife are finally considered controlled. This has been confirmed by the president of the Island Council, Pedro Martín, in the SER.
During the night, a device from the Military Emergency Unit was activated so that several groups of residents of the affected municipalities, especially Santa Úrsula and Puerto de La Cruz, could return to their homes. In total, 1,400 people have been evacuated, including eight minors from a reception center, 30 advanced persons from a social health center and some 400 tourists. “Except for a small regrowth that was controlled immediately, there was no greater danger,” said Martín, who did acknowledge that new outbreaks originated in controversial areas such as a storage room. Forest brigades have also acted in operations.
Also, most of the tourists evacuated from the La Quinta Park Hotel were able to return to the accommodation late in the day, where this morning the workers were trying to restore normality. There, they told Radio Ciub Tenerife that “moments of panic” were experienced during the eviction, but that the action “was quick, trying to maintain possible tranquility.” Several fire brigades and the EMU continue to operate in the area after the outbreak was temporarily reactivated tonight.
Regarding the situation at the airports of Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofía and Tenerife Norte-Los Rodeos, Pedro Martín has clarified that normality is beginning to emerge, while last night a device was deployed with the Red Cross with the installation of 114 beds and the distribution of diapers, personal hygiene products and belongings. “Our hope is that the wind speed will decrease and that it will turn in a couple of days,” concluded the president.
