Containment: it’s time to file your income tax return

Delayed due to the coronavirus epidemic, the annual income tax campaign opens this Monday, April 20 for French taxpayers.

Delayed deadlines

The withholding of income tax did not remove the annual return from the return. Taxpayers still have to send the administration a summary of their income from the past year and the expenses giving rise to a tax reduction. But this year due to Coronavirus, the deadlines have been extended.

For online declaration:

  • Thursday June 4 midnight for Ariège, Aude and Aveyron
  • Monday June 8 midnight for Haute-Garonne, Gers, Hérault, Gard, Lot and Lozère
  • Thursday 11 June midnight for the Hautes-Pyrénées, Pyrénées-Orientales, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne.

The paper declaration remains available. Those who opted for this option in 2019, especially the elderly, will receive tax mail by mid-May. The deadline for return is Friday June 12 midnight.

Confined tax centers

With this extended deadline, the tax authorities hope to avoid bottlenecks at the tax centers during the deconfinement.
Because for the moment, all the centers are closed. Impossible to go there to get help or have explanations.

The tax authorities advise contacting your tax center by email via your specific space on impots.gouv.fr or call 0 809 401 401.

Big news: the tacit declaration

Taxpayers who will have nothing to change their pre-filled declaration will no longer have the obligation to validate it this year. If the situation has not changed compared to the previous year and all of the income is already entered on the declaration, there is nothing to do or return.
This principle of “who says no word consents” will affect about 12 million taxpayers, or one third of households.

Updating the tax invoice

Even if taxpayers have already paid most of their bill by monthly withdrawal via withholding tax, the annual declaration remains mandatory.
It allows the Ministry of Finance to settle the accounts for the year 2019.
Those who paid too much tax will receive a refund this summer. Those who have not paid enough will have to pay their return due.

Finally, this declaration is used to calculate the new withholding tax rate which will apply to all income from September. It will also be the basis for defining the amount of the various aids granted subject to income conditions.
