Consumers’ association: price on supermarket shelves is often incorrect | Money

Albert Heijn and Jumbo made the most mistakes: at those two chains, 22 percent of the items were incorrectly priced. Aldi turned out to be the most accurate, with 5 percent incorrect prices. At Lidl, the price was not correct for 7 percent of the products, at Coop 8 percent. Spar follows with 11 percent and in the visited Plus stores, the price at the checkout for 15 percent of the items did not match the price on the shelf.

At one Jumbo store, no less than 40 percent of the shopping cart was incorrectly priced, according to the Consumentenbond. Incorrect prices did not always turn out to be to the detriment of consumers. “For 51 products, the price at the checkout was lower than indicated in the store,” said the union. The cash register price was actually higher for 36 products. The price difference was on average larger in the latter category.

The Consumers’ Association finds that things often go wrong, especially with offers. “More than half of the products with a different price was a promotional product.”

The price at the till is usually the correct one. According to the researchers, price deviations mainly occur because the supermarket has not replaced the tickets after a price change. There is a technical solution for this: electronic price tags that are automatically adjusted when the price is adjusted in the computer system.

Prices of products change very regularly, the Consumers’ Association acknowledges. Still, according to the organization, customers should be able to assume that price tags are correct. According to the association, anyone who is disadvantaged at the till would be wise to take a picture of the shelf and to request a refund of the overpaid amount at the service counter.
