Conservatives criticize student volunteer grants

The Conservative Party denounced Sunday the fact that the grant of $ 900 million by the federal government for students who volunteer is assured by a third party, in this case, the international organization UNIS.

In a letter sent to the Auditor General of Canada, Karen Hogan, the Conservatives said that this measure raised “justifiable concerns” and that “the links between the UNIS organization and the Prime Minister [Justin Trudeau] are well known. “

Since a third party is involved in the file, the government will not add this amount to Ottawa’s spending on the pandemic. The opposition party therefore indicated that it was a circumvention of the usual process.

“The Trudeau government is incurring unprecedented levels of spending and program administration during COVID-19, but that doesn’t mean that accountability, transparency and value for money should be ignored. In fact, they should never be ignored, ”said Conservative MPs Pierre Poilievre, Dan Albas and Raquel Dancho.

Thanks to this Ottawa initiative, post-secondary students and recent graduates will be able to earn between $ 1,000 and $ 5,000 by volunteering.
