Supplier of mineral resources, platform for all-research, even new living space for people: the goals of the Mars missions are diverse. Several private and national programs vie for who will send the first person to the Red Planet in the new decade.
–
These are currently the most important projects:
–
- Tesla founder Elon Musk (48) is probably the furthest among private investors with his SpaceX project. The billionaire’s goal: human settlement. He announced the first manned flight in 2024.
- The billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (55) wants to target Mars with the New Armstrong project.
- NASA is under construction of the Deep Space Transport (DST), which could put 2033 people into orbit on Mars. A landing is not planned then. The next unmanned mission will start in 2020.
- The European-Russian Mars mission ExoMars from ESA and Roskosmos suffered a setback after the crash of the Schiaparelli landing probe in 2016. In 2020 a drill is to take soil samples to a depth of two meters in a new trial. Although six people have been locked in a module for 520 days for test purposes, a manned mission is not in sight.
- Since landing on the back of the moon, the Chinese have been a major player in space travel. There is talk of the first manned mission in the 2030s.
- Mars One wanted to settle people from 2026, for which the company was looking for volunteers. The Swiss Steve Schild (35) was also a candidate for the mission without return. Meanwhile, the company that wanted to broadcast the adventure as a reality show is broke.
- India, Saudi Arabia and Japan are also involved in their own Mars missions.

“Without a magnetic field, cosmic rays are far too high for humans”
At the Swiss Space Center at the ETH in Lausanne, where the only Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier (75) is working, the race of state and private companies is being watched with excitement. Center director Volker Gass (55) dampens all hopes of being able to settle on the neighboring planet in the near future. “Without a magnetic field, cosmic rays are far too high for people. But who knows, maybe hundreds of years from now you will be able to create an artificial magnetic field with satellites. »
–
Technically, it is already possible to successfully land unmanned spacecraft on Mars. In 2024 Elon Musk wants to send the first people out. How realistic is this manned Mars flight schedule? Too optimistic for Gass. “If the programs continue as before, it could be about 2045 by that point.”
–
Private only with small chances
The long journey is extremely difficult: it can only be started every two years when Mars is closest to Earth, around 55 million kilometers away. For the outward and return journey of six to nine months each and a stay of six months, the crew would have to carry all the material they need to live with them. To set up a base, unmanned freight transport with air, food and fuel would be necessary for the return journey.
–
Of the various Mars programs, Gass gives the smallest the private and the national – such as those from China and the American Nasa – the greatest opportunities. «National projects are much more sustainable in terms of planning and finance. What happens if a wealthy private investor dies and the heirs prefer to use the research money to build a villa in Hawaii? »
–
Even if Gass does not currently offer a lot of opportunities for people to settle on Mars, he thinks the research funds are well invested. «It is part of human beings that they want to go further and further and explore unknown things. He drove across the sea at the time, even though the earth was thought to be a plate, the edge of which would be plunged down. »
–
Climate struggle takes a lot of money
But there is something that could stop the race to Mars. Gass: “What happens if the money is urgently needed for other mega-projects?” The space specialist names the fight against global warming, for example. For example, the newly elected EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (61) is demanding a trillion euros for her “Green Deal”. This money is not just lying around on the street.
–
It is therefore quite possible that the climate struggle forced by the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg (17) will delay, if not slow down, the race to Mars. “Because there is currently no way to settle there, it wouldn’t be that bad,” says Gass. “The main thing is that we take care of our own planet.”
–
Obwaldner high-tech lets helicopters climb —2020 will be a Mars year – in which the Maxon company in Sachseln OW is actively involved. In July, both ESA and Nasa will send unmanned rockets with a rover to land on Mars.
As with several other Mars missions, Maxon is involved in both projects. Around 50 parts from Sachseln are installed in the ESA rover Rosalind Franklin, so precision motors for driving the six wheels, the solar panels, the camera mast and for a drill that can take samples up to two meters deep. At NASA’s rover, Maxon components ensure that rock samples can be collected.
The launch of a NASA propeller helicopter, in which six Maxon 10 mm motors provide flight control in the thin atmosphere, is eagerly awaited. China and Saudi Arabia are also planning flights to Mars in 2020, but without landing.
How about Maxon’s manned missions? Media spokesman Stefan Roschi: «Maxon is involved in many space projects – for manned and unmanned missions by space organizations and private companies. We will be able to say more about this when the projects are ready to go. »Guido Felder

Our red neighbor —Mars is our little neighbor and orbits the sun as the fourth innermost planet in 687 days. It is considered an earth-like planet, but has only about a tenth the mass of the earth. Due to the lower gravity, we are two thirds lighter on Mars. Two moons orbit the Red Planet: Phobos and Deimos. The temperatures on Mars range from minus 133 degrees Celsius to plus 27 degrees. Mars is named after the Roman god of war. The red color of the planet can also be seen in the night sky with the naked eye.
