Conflicting opinions of Colombians in NY before Petro triumph

As soon as the results of the elections in Colombia and the victory of Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez for the presidency and vice-presidency were announced, there were expressions of joy in Washington Square Park on Sunday night.

But this morning, walking through Jackson Heights, we find that Colombian sentiments are mixed.

“Happy and happy with Petro’s win, it was the best thing that could have happened in Colombia,” said Arcesio Arena.

“I liked neither of the two candidates so I feel very bad. It’s a shame that there isn’t something in Colombia that really knows how to represent us,” said María Márquez.

“It is always time to respect the decision and unanimity of our compatriots. From here in New York, the only thing one can say is precisely that we are waiting for a change and hoping that any change is the best for Colombia”, said Luis Fernando Guerra.

In Jackson Heights, where a high number of Colombians reside, the atmosphere was calm the day after the elections, without an evident post-election climate.

Beyond how they feel, we ask Colombians what they expect from this new government once a cabinet is formed and the different ministries of the country are assigned. This they told us.

“Well-being, prosperity, a new change awaits you,” said Camilo Escobar.

“Very bad. It goes from bad to worse,” said Luz Miriam Gómez.

“Well, it’s more like uncertainty, let’s say that, from my personal point of view, Gustavo Petro was the one who had a clearer and more complete vision of what is needed for the country,” said Diego Rodríguez.

“Ha! Black, I see it very black, really. Sad,” Edith Urib said.

According to information provided by the Colombian Consulate in New York, 6,070 early votes were registered and last Sunday, a total of 11,897 people exercised their right to vote in the 8 positions authorized by the entity.

President-elect Gustavo Petro will assume power on August 7.
