The Indonesian navy announced at a press conference on Saturday that they have found parts from the missing submarine.
The findings mean that there is no hope that any of the crew of 53 have survived.
Among other things, parts for a torpedo and a bottle of grease have been found that are believed to be used to oil the periscope. Prayer mats have also been found, which were probably used by the crew.
Fight against the clock
24 ships and one aircraft are said to have taken part in the search, which was intensified as the time approached when the crew would have run out of oxygen anyway.
According to the country’s military chief, the submarine ran out of oxygen early Saturday.
The submarine was found at a depth of 850 meters, but the vessel is not built to withstand depths of more than 500 meters.
On Friday, President Joko Widodo arrived in the port city of Banyuwangi in Java to follow the rescue operation.
– Our main priority is the safety of the crew of 53. To the affected families, I want to say that I understand you, and we do our best to save everyone on board, Widodo said at a press conference.
