Conabios approved 471 research protocols

Some 471 research protocols on different health topics have been approved to be carried out in the country in the last 11 years by the National Council of Bioethics in Health (Conabios), the governing body of biomedical research carried out in the Dominican Republic.

Among the research aspects that more requests for approval are received at Conabios, are those related to HIV, diabetes, vaccines, hypertension, Covid-19, glaucoma, lung cancer, knee osteoarthritis, metastatic skin melanoma tumors , ocular hypertension, breast cancer, vitiligo and psoriasis, among others. The details of the work of the organization were offered by Dr. Aura Celeste Fernández, president of the National Council of Bioethics in Health, when yesterday presenting the Institutional Memories “Eleven years of Management: January 2011 to December 2021”, during an act, headed, in addition , by the executive director of the organization, Dr. José Plácido Montero.

Conabios directors explained that in the eleven-year period, a total of 471 new protocols were approved, 12 reintroduced and 14 observed; 320 amendments to protocols and 348 amendments to informed consent for a grand total of 1,139 approvals, of which 177 were with observations. During the period, they pointed out, a total of 20 protocols were not approved for execution; seven amendments to protocols and four amendments to informed consent, for a total of 31 non-approvals. Montero highlighted that Conabios increased the administrative staff.
