Reporting from Forbes, 6 August 2019, the rivalry between Adidas and Nike has been going on for a long time. The two companies compete for the apparel and sporting goods market.

Nike earned about US $ 6.7 billion in additional total revenue since 2015. Their revenue growth is at an average of 6.5 percent.

On the other hand, Adidas was able to generate around 7 billion US dollars in their total revenue. The company is growing at an average of 11.3 percent per year.

The revenue growth of the two companies was due to the apparel and sports shoes segments, which have experienced strengthening growth in recent years.

This factor is inseparable from the continuing global trend such as an increase in the level of sports participation and increased health awareness.

Even though it has a far adrift of total revenue, Adidas recorded a growth rate of 70 percent faster than Nike.

Adidas excellence is due to its success in the sports shoe line which has always recorded satisfying sales.

Adidas shoes posted an additional $ 5.8 billion in total revenue since 2015, growing at an average annual rate of 17.6 percent.

Meanwhile, Nike was only able to add 4.3 billion US dollars at an average of 6.8 percent.

Reporting from CNN Money, April 16 2018, Adidas’ rapid revenue growth was due to the company’s shrewdness in reading consumer demand.

“Demand for high technical performance shoes is starting to die down, and consumers are starting to become interested in fashion,” said Christopher Svezia, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.

“Adidas is very aggressive. They are really pursuing this opportunity,” he continued.

The rivalry between the two companies also occurs in the marketing line.

Adidas and Nike are competing to attract celebrities, both sportsmen and celebrities, to popularize their products.

Reporting from Forbes, 22 August 2019, Adidas launched the Yeezy shoe line, which is a collaboration with famous rapper Kanye West, in February 2015.

The result was an incredible boom, and the Yeezy became one of the most popular shoes.

Meanwhile, Nike already has a collaboration shoe product that is no less famous, namely Air Jordan. This shoe is a collaboration between Nike and veteran basketball player Michael Jordan.

However, Air Jordan, which was first released in 1985, realized by Nike, it would not be able to compete to build hype among consumers.

In 2018, Nike became a sponsor for French football club, Paris Saint Germain. With this, Nike has succeeded in attracting soccer superstars, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to popularize their shoe products.

Adidas and Nike have long track records in the sales of sports apparel and equipment. However, Adidas is an older company than Nike.

Reporting from Aiobot, 6 April 2017, Adidas is a multinational company headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany and is the largest sportswear manufacturer in all of Europe.

The Adidas brand was first registered on August 18, 1949 by its founder, Adolf Dassler.

Adidas first added its iconic 3-striped logo after the 1952 Summer Olympics. In 1989, French industrialist Bernard Taupie bought the company for 243.9 million euros because it went bankrupt.

Taupie then moved the company’s production line to Asia and also hired Madonna to promote the product. Thanks to that decision, the Adidas shoe line has finally gained popularity.

Nike history

Meanwhile, Nike was originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) and was founded by Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman in January 1964.

In its first year of business, BRS sold 1,300 pairs of Japanese running shoes with a gross income of around US $ 8,000. In 1965, the company made about 20,000 US dollars.

The iconic “Swoosh” icon was first worn on Nike shoes on June 18, 1971.

In 1976, Nike recruited John Brown and Partners as its advertising agency. With aggressive marketing tactics, Nike has succeeded in controlling a 50 percent share of the sports shoe market in the US.

Nike’s “Just Do It” ad was released in 1988 and was named one of the top five advertising slogans of the 20th century.

In 1990 Nike moved its headquarters to Beaverton, Oregon where they finally opened their first retail store and called it “Niketown”

Reporting from The Telegraph, April 16, 2011, in addition to focusing on the sales and production of clothing and sports equipment, Adidas and Nike are also trying to expand their market by acquiring companies engaged in the same field.

In 2003, Nike acquired the Converse brand, which is known for its Chuck Taylor All Star series. Meanwhile, to strengthen penetration in the US market, Adidas acquired Reebok in 2006.

However, Nike emerged and succeeded in taking over the world in a relatively short time.

These two brands dominate sales of sports shoes and apparel worldwide, and are unlikely to collapse any time soon.
