Donald Rukare Confirmed as Commonwealth Sport President as Ahmedabad Secures 2030 Games
NEW DELHI – Donald Rukare of Uganda has been officially appointed president of Commonwealth sport, solidifying his leadership following a period as interim head.The announcement coincides with confirmation that Ahmedabad, India, will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a critically important milestone as the organization approaches its centenary celebration.
Rukare’s permanent appointment follows the unexpected resignation of Chris Jenkins in April 2025, during which time he served as interim president. The dual announcement signals a period of stability and forward momentum for Commonwealth Sport,an organization dedicated to fostering athletic excellence and unity across its member nations. The upcoming Glasgow 2026 Games and the Malta 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games will serve as crucial stepping stones toward the landmark 2030 edition in Ahmedabad.

Rukare brings a wealth of experience to the position, having served as President of the Uganda Swimming Federation since 2005. His leadership extends to national sporting governance, with appointments as Chair of Uganda’s National Council of Sports in 2020 and President of the Uganda Olympic Committee in 2021. These roles demonstrate a long-standing commitment to developing sport at both the grassroots and elite levels, positioning him to effectively guide Commonwealth Sport into its next chapter.
