In short, it is useless to go around it: Montalbano is not very comfortable with matters related to love. And the disappearance of the beautiful Michela Prestia puts her ability to extricate herself in the labyrinths of complexity and the fatal deceptions of amorous sentiment to the greatest ever test.
Michela is a girl with a dramatic, if not tragic past: unjustly rejected by her family at a very young age, she met the wrong men, who humiliated and exploited her, leading her to become a prostitute. But over time she managed to recover from that ruin, rebuilt her life and found love: Saverio Moscato, with whom she now lives and who in turn loves her totally and unconditionally.
But just now that she seems to have found a stable and happy condition, Michela mysteriously disappears. Most believe that, having had so many lovers in the past, she simply abandoned Saverio and ran off with another man.
Montalbano, however, soon realizes that this is not the case. That something serious must have happened to Michela. Maybe she was even killed. But by whom? And why? A meeting with two elderly theater actors, the Di Giovanni spouses, helps him to solve this mystery.
Montalbano, through their bizarre and tender story – and also thanks to a renewed feeling of jealousy towards Livia … understands that Michela’s disappearance is the fruit of a crazy, impossible and tragic love.
