The fact that the Schalke board is now putting a stop to it is remarkable, because the heavily indebted club (237 million euros in debt) could even endanger its own existence. As a reminder: Royal Blue collects 9 million euros from Gazprom every second division year, and even 15 million euros in the event of promotion. Without this money, Schalke might have been insolvent for a long time.
Schalke’s most important task now is to permanently break away from Putin’s blood money companies. In 2017, the club last had the financial strength and opportunity to ban Gazprom – instead, the contract was renewed again.
