Commemorating National Children’s Day, Indonesia Faces Three Burdens of Malnutrition

Nutritionist from the Indonesian Nutritionist Association (Square) Dr. Atmarita, MPH reminded, currently Indonesia is facing three burdens malnutrition (triple burden of malnutrition) that is malnutrition, excess nutritionas well as deficiency micronutrients.

Malnutrition includes underweight (low weight for age), stunting (low height for age), and wasting (low weight for height). While excess nutrition includes overweight and obesity.

“We are facing enormous problems ranging from the triple burden of impacts to non-communicable diseases (PTM) in adulthood which are actually even more dangerous,” said Atmarita.

The principle of maintaining children’s growth and development, according to Atmarita, is actually easy to do, namely by applying guidelines balanced nutrition “Fill My Plate”. These guidelines cover half a plate of fruit and vegetables, one-third side dishes (source of protein), and two-thirds of staple food (source of carbohydrates) at each meal.

According to Atmarita, education about balanced nutrition needs to be conveyed and understood by all children at every age level. He said that the whole family or household also needs to be equipped with an understanding of nutrition problems by cadres in a small community.
